No it doesn't. It's actually one of the things that sets it apart from many of the current books in fantasy. My goal was to write a book that was aimed at adults, but could be read by people of all ages. So to that end there is no sex, graphic violence, or explicit language.
Originally, I was writing this book for my then thirteen-year-old daughter to help her get into reading (she struggled due to dyslexia). So again, it's no a YA book by any means, but it is something that can be enjoyed by a wide range of ages.

Now that I have read the book I thought I should clear things up once and for all. There is some minor swearing. Nothing ever in the f range, but there is low tear swearing (H---, D---). As for the other matter in this book specifically there is no graphic sex, but there are some things that are implied, such as, yes the one supporting character runs a brothel, and another character wakes up in a room in which he had been with a woman and there is a scene in which a young woman is almost assaulted. However, in the prequel series, The Ryira Chronicles, a woman is killed after being sexually abused. The second book in this series is too visceral in my opinion for the 11 - 14 age bracket of children. There is a torture victim described in this book and the occasional reference to adult themes. This is a great series don't get me wrong. The characters are fantastic and lifelike, and the plot is well formed and very engaging, so I would highly recommend it to any fan of Lord of the Rings and, though I have not read it myself, Game of Thrones. But it is not suited in my opinion for readers under the age of fifteen. But hey that's just my opinion. Thank you to everyone who responded to my question, your answers were invaluable to my decision to read this book and it is now one of my most favorite book series in any category.

I disagree with you Micah. This book eludes to it happening but doesn't go into ANY kind of detail. The author specifically says he was writing a book aimed at adults but could be read by people of all ages; therefore it is exactly that. I would be very surprised and sad for a teenager that doesn't know that sex happens. I thought they taught sex education in grade school.

That's great. So many young people should be reading adult novels, I think, because the prose in YA books is so childish. Building a good vocabulary and solid spelling comes from reading books.

I can't think of a single scene or a single bit of dialogue that would offend even the most sensitive reader. In retrospect this is remarkable, because in every other respect these novels deal with a number of mature themes in a frank and unrestrained manner. I see this as yet another indication of Michael Sullivan's impressive talent as a writer.

I do not agree. My son started reading this book as early as chapter 3 there is a scene of a character waking up in a bed that he doesn't recognize, trying to find his clothing (which he must tell apart from hers. He talks of girls that value their virginity more then the crown. The girl that he has slept with says that she wishes he would stay the full night... etc... While not a graphic sex scene I was glad that my teen stopped reading it. And from his comments I decided to not read this author's work.

I don't recall any swearing or "sex scenes," but there is a brothel and its Madam and other employees pop up periodically in this book. There are allusions to the characters visiting them for obvious reasons. The Madam, her employees and their brothel are more significant characters in the related back-story series called They Riyria Chronicles.
