My 10 year old son has been assigned this book as part of a reading bowl competition. He is mature, very bright and in gifted education. I don't doubt his ability to read this, but I'm concerned about the emotional punch he might get from such violence and human suffering. He tends to be a bit sensitive. How graphic is the imagery? Is it appropriate for this age? Thoughts?

As a retired teacher, I encourage you to also read the book so that you can fully respond to his questions, and also support his effort to research and answer them for himself. Since it is assigned, please trust that the teacher is well aware and that it will be discussed in context with other background information. I hope they will also be reading other books on this topic to compare/contrast and broaden their awareness of the complexity of the Holocaust.
I just finished reading it myself, I'm a trained Holocaust educator, and I urge you to encourage him and share the journey. A recent survey revealed that nearly half of millennials could not define what Holocaust was- some even mis-identified it as 9/11. In today's paper there was an obituary for a 106 year old local man who was a Holocaust survivor and educator. Those who lived through it will soon be gone, and it falls to the rest of humanity to make sure the truth is told and shared to prevent it from happening again.

I am a 12 year old boy who hates to read. But, when i read this book it pulled me into the book world. I totally suggest to read this book. LOVE IT SO MUCH. Only bad thing is it is kinda graphic. Be ready to face the real world when you read this book.

If you question what your child is reading, why not read it yourself first?

I hope you didn't make a fuss. The teacher obviously had a reason for choosing it. It's suspenseful, and me myself was already getting into history and politics at 11. Next time you're wondering about the book they're Reading, you should find some spoilery review. :)

Might be a bit late to answer this, but I read this at 10 and it wasn't too bad. You can't expect it to be a children's book, it does take place during WW2. It is about a Holocaust survivor, and is historical. I loved this book, if your child likes historical fiction I'm sure he will like it too.

Definitely, I read it in 4th grade and remember the language being relatively easy. It was i think my first ww2 book and it was an emotional but I don't remember it being too graphic just very sad but I think no matter what age one is those events are very concerning and sad but this book is one of the best to ease a young reader into the topic of the Holocaust,

It was an amazing book. It can get graphic at some parts but your son should be fine.

I think the book is fine for a 10 year old. If you are concerned about what your son is reading, you should read the book yourself. It is a short, quick and good read. It isn't the best book on the Holocaust that I have read but it was good.

It's completely fine, in my opinion. I greatly enjoyed this book and I have no doubt that he will like it as well.
