Eliel asked Scott Sigler:

Scott, just listened to the 1-star review Friday Fix and I have to wonder if I'm "doing it wrong". I give books I like a lot 3-star review, and books that I cannot stop talking about for weeks a 4-star review. I always thought that the 5-star review should mean something phenomenal, and be rarely given out. But if it means that the books I love don't get written any more, perhaps I need to go and change my curve?

Scott Sigler Hello Eliel,

I think the way you do it is the way you do it. There is no right and wrong.

However, the "five star" system is a little restrictive, if you think about it in percentages. 100% love for a book = 5 stars. 80% = 4 stars. And, 3 stars means it the book was 60% satisfactory. In American school grading terminology, that means 5-star = A, 4-star = B- 3-star = D.

So, consider those equivalencies. If that is accurate with your feelings on a book, cool. It not, maybe you re-think. Either way, it's not right or wrong as long as you feel comfortable with the way you apply stars.
