A Goodreads user
asked:
Is it worth watching the movie if you've only read the first one? Or should I read the others (which I intend to do) and then watch the movie? And, is the movie any good?

While there are any number of similarities, each version of Hitchhiker's Guide is actually extraordinarily different from the others.
I saw the movie first, then read the books, then managed to get my hands on the radio show. The only one I couldn't make it through was the TV show. But all of them are quite distinct from each other in key ways, so experiencing one doesn't inherently "ruin" the others.
I personally quite enjoyed the movie, it was the reason I read the books (which I actually prefer to listen to on audiobook; it was originally developed as radio program and that really shows, especially in the first book).

The movie is based on the first book, and invents new elements to make a complete story within one movie. You can watch it before reading the other books.
I didn't like the movie. I couldn't help but compare it with the book. Whatever was invented in the movie seemed a lot less elegant than what Douglas Adams would have written.
