You must continue, don't stop know. Yeah, it's a little hard to understand some points, because they will be clearer after you discover some points! I've read the entire series and I had the same feeling after finish "The Gunslinger", but the other books are totally different and amazing. I dare you to continue and read "The Drawing of the Three", if you don't like you can stop to read, but I'm pretty sure that you will like, Let me know what you think after read the second book!
Long days and pleasant nights!

If you already got through the first book you HAVE to keep going. That's like doing everything to bake a cake and then being like "Making the cake wasn't very fun. Should I continue and eat it anyways?" But seriously, the first book is there to lay the foundation for the entire series, while necessary, it only gets better from there.

I'm with Blake. Maybe you could start the second one and see if you like it better, but if you don't like it, you don't like it. Honestly, I wasn't big on The Gunslinger either, and I don't plan on continuing. I was really bummed. Everybody talked it up so much, so I expected it to be great. Instead I found it slow and hard to understand. For me, life is too short to try to force yourself through a book/series you obviously don't like... but people are different. I'm glad other people found so much enjoyment with this book, it just didn't resonate with me

My advice: If you didn't dig the first book in a series, don't bother with the rest. Life's too short to read bad (to you) books, and this is one of those series that takes a loooooong time to get through. Put it aside and move on to reading something you actually enjoy. You won't regret doing so.
p.s. If you really are desperate to know what happens in the series, read the cliff notes/spoilery sum-up on wikipeda.

Stephen King actually contradicts himself quite a bit between this one and The Drawing of the Three. But that doesn't make The Gunslinger any less important. It kind of sets the tone for the rest of the series (hazy, dream-like, mystical) and is important. Yes, the series can get a little heavy in terms of getting through, but it has been called by King himself his "magnum opus." Do continue, it's definitely worth it. Especially because The Dark Tower movie is coming out in June, and there's talks of a TV show based on the fourth book. But back to the books: the further you go on the series, the more Stephen King goes back to his classic style (if you've read more by him). The Dark Tower is definitely one of the best series I've read by one of the best authors currently writing.

I know of a large group of people that read this first book and thought... meh.
However, at least in my opinion, this series gets so much better when you enter the next book. Many of the plot wholes that might have made you scratch your head in confusion are cleared up and you get to meet new characters, go on fun adventures, get introduced to new universes, and learn more about the main characters interesting past. If you read just this book, then it won't make sense, but if you read the others you will see how it fits in as part of a whole.
Hope I helped! :)

I think if the first book doesn't grab you it's unlikely the rest of the series will. I've read the first five, but the first 3 are the best by far IMO.

I´m feeling the same, and I had the same doubt ! Thanks for you question!

Its one of those really unexpected books. Where you constantly ask yourself "Where tf is this going?"

if anyone is interested, i finally finished the series.
Thoroughly enjoyed the entire series. It deffo had its slow parts but since i was weaving the books with quite a few other Stepen king books, it got really bloody exciting seeing different references to the dark tower.
Overall, i think this one is going to stay with me for a while. And i'm not even ashamed to admit that the last one made me cry.

Wish I had quit after the first.

This series is fantastic. I've heard a lot of people suggesting you skip the first book but it's absolutely needed to get the full impact of the ending. Read the series and enjoy.

I gave up part way through the first book. I found it incoherent and needed some sort of explanation as to where it was all going.

I read about 80% of it and could not finish it, did not enjoy the 80% and I have read a lot of King.

The Dark Tower series are a cracking good read. I've read all the books twice and getting ready for a third go-around. 'The Talisman', it is my equal favourite Stephen King stand-alone fantasy story, along with 'The Green Mile'. I first read The Dark Tower series after the afore-mentioned books and wasnt expecting it to top them, but I was thrilled that it was right up there with them.

I am contemplating the same!

It was hard to follow sometimes, but it just seemed so long!! Other than that I liked it.

It only gets better from there.

I'm only 1/2 way through and I'm finding the story line extremely boring. Amazon had this book rated at 4.2 stars with over 2000+ ratings. Usually, they are dead on but not this time. Other books in the series were rated 5 stars so I felt the series would be a good investment of my time. I just can't see me laboring through the 2nd half of Gunslinger to even move on to the 2nd book.

i am with you on that one, i started to read it , then i stopped . I felt the same way got lost .

I read the first book and really didn't like it much but then I listened to the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th on CD and I enjoyed them more. The second one was a little more engaging than the first for me but the 3rd and 4th were very enjoyable to me (as a book on tape/cd at least).
