I think this story was a thinly disguised murder. Fen causeed her miscarriage and death and then buried her at sea. At least bankson knew she was headed back to him.

My understanding was she died hemhorraging blood as a result of the miscarriage. Fen had her buried at sea in order to distance himself from the incident.

Agree with Ellen - Nell tossed the flute in the sea and Fen killer her in a rage. That was the reason for the quick disposal of Nell's body. Fen was counting on the flute to make his name and fortune as an anthropologist.
