This is my take, Frank had a conversation with his sort of girlfriend hairdresser Vicky ( I no longer have the book, I think that was her name) and tells her the whole sordid story. At the end of the chapter he says he is going to call her son. It was mentioned her son was a journalist with a top paper, my guess is the son came out with the story in the news and the Gardners and Maggie were arrested. It was mentioned when Frank tried to visit Maggie in jail she was the only one who had to serve, their money protected them from their crimes ( sound familiar?). Not sure why the author didn’t make this clearer, but I found it tragic and mostly believable.

I find the answers here so unsatisfying but don’t really have a better answer either! Did anyone catch the two references though to the time, and making suggestions on running 15 minutes ahead? Sounds like the prison might be ran by or at least influenced by the Gardeners.

part of me wondered if, after noticing the clocks were ahead of time, if he thought it was influenced by the gardeners somehow?? and wondering if maggie was actually in jail or was lying or something else sketchy? or he just wants to catch one more glimpse of her, like a father would. i couldn’t tell honestly
