The answer to this question changes daily and monthly and yearly. Right now I'm going to go with Margaret Atwood. I also just finished reading Neil Gaiman, American Gods. A lot of speculative fiction right now, I guess! But I'm always in awe of Alice Munro, Barbara Kingsolver's Poisonwood Bible, and Blindness by Jose Saramago. How did you research this book? You are really able to get into the head of Audrey, who lives in this world of magical realism, and make her really come to life on the page - it's not a trite, constructed version of a teenager caught in that kind of world. It's totally believable. How did you do it?
