Helen Kantor Audrey didn't really become vivid for me until I wrote her in first person. And most of getting into that persona really involved stepping back into my own childhood imagination. I was surprised to find it is still in there, and still accessible. Doing this was one of the great pleasures of writing this story. Thanks for asking such a great question.
Helen Kantor The answer to this question changes daily and monthly and yearly. Right now I'm going to go with Margaret Atwood. I also just finished reading Neil Gaiman, American Gods. A lot of speculative fiction right now, I guess! But I'm always in awe of Alice Munro, Barbara Kingsolver's Poisonwood Bible, and Blindness by Jose Saramago. Boy, that one will change the way you look at the world. Thanks for asking!
