Julie asked Helen Kantor:

How did you research this book? You are really able to get into the head of Audrey, who lives in this world of magical realism, and make her really come to life on the page - it's not a trite, constructed version of a teenager caught in that kind of world. It's totally believable. How did you do it?

Helen Kantor Audrey didn't really become vivid for me until I wrote her in first person. And most of getting into that persona really involved stepping back into my own childhood imagination. I was surprised to find it is still in there, and still accessible. Doing this was one of the great pleasures of writing this story. Thanks for asking such a great question.
