Dawn I have to wonder how long they were planning the escape. Might have been a “clue” she wanted people to see - thus why she was so upset it was painted over.

Karen Boman I think it was a red herring - she had told Tracy she had a boyfriend she was meeting every night, but I think she was actually sneaking off to visit TJ to plan her eventual escape.

Caryn Robbins I had the exact same question! The author was so thorough explaining everything else, I'm surprised she left that one detail hanging. I think the two suggestions that have been offered here (it was part of the plan to frame JP or he was her teenage crush) are both feasible.

judith We all seem to agree that the mural was part of a "setup," but why were TJ & Barbara out to get John Paul? He may have been a creep & they didn't like him, but Louise was the only one he actually hurt (& Barbara didn't even know about that,) So, the bigger question is what motivated them to specifically pick him to frame? Plus the timeline on this means they had been planning it for a while.

Diane Barbara was sneaking out at night to visit TJ to work on her escape plan up until the final moments. The mural was painted with the initials hidden in the river to point to John Paul. It was all to set him up as the suspected kidnapper/killer. She told Tracey she had an older boyfriend that she was meeting every night again to point suspicion towards John Paul
