If you read this book do you have to read the sequels to know what is going to happen or do they simply narrate another story just with the same characters?

I first read this and at least the next two books in '83.... and since my brother recommended them to my Mom and I, I started in the middle, or else backwards.... it's been a few decades, because I just grabbed the one that was available in the house. (less)
