A Goodreads user asked:

If you read this book do you have to read the sequels to know what is going to happen or do they simply narrate another story just with the same characters?

James Thoenes You make it sound like reading is a terrible thing.
I think if you read this, you will most likely enjoy it and want to read the others. You won't have to but you'll want to.
Merritt Brenneman You don't really need to read the rest of the series if you don't want to, this one wraps itself up pretty well.
Amey I read just the first one and yes you do feel an urge to continue and read the next one. Wont call it a cliffhanger though, it felt more like an abrupt ending.
Nathan Hausspiegel You don't have to read the sequels, but I would advise that you do. All the sequels follow a similar plot, and all the characters are still there.
Hitesh Joshi For the benefit of posterity, don't read the sequels. They are a piece of crap. This book is so good that the author has to write something completely insipid and stupid to compensate for it.
RF Why wouldn't you read the sequels? I read the first one, and then decided that it was so funny, I had to read the other four!
Timothy Peterson If you don't read the sequels, you won't find out the question to the answer to the ultimate question of Life, the universe and everything.
Ketie Saner I'd argue that you'll need to read the other's to completely understand what happened in this book.
Lisa Honestly, you don't even need to read them in order... and while with many series, it helps to do so if you care about the character arcs (when looking for a good murder mystery, I rarely care how the lead detective met their spouse, or that the K9 detective is the grandson of the original K9 partner),

I first read this and at least the next two books in '83.... and since my brother recommended them to my Mom and I, I started in the middle, or else backwards.... it's been a few decades, because I just grabbed the one that was available in the house.
BlackbirdFrenzy Meagher Honestly, read them all. Think of it as a series of inside jokes you don't get in on until further down the story. They are soooo delightful in their quirky humour and cleverness.
Karim You don't have to since the first book is a good read in itself, but since it is a rather short yet extremely funny book I'm sure you can't resist to read the other books as well :-)
