Emily asked Lisa Schroeder:

How do you know when to make line breaks when writing a story in verse? I really want to write a story like this, but I'm having trouble finding a "right" way of formatting it. Any advice on writing in verse would be appreciated! :)

Lisa Schroeder Hi Emily,

I think a lot of it just comes from what feels right when writing. I know that's not a very helpful answer. The main thing is not to write a novel that could be written in complete sentences and then just break those sentences up and then call it "verse." There should be poetic devices throughout - imagery, repetition, similes, metaphors, etc.

Here are some blog posts on writing verse that you might find helpful:

I think the main thing is that as you are writing your first draft, don't worry too much about the "right" way. Just get the story down. Good luck!
