Andrea My impression is that it had been going on for a while. On page 192/193 there is a dialog exchange between Noor and Jamie in which Jamie says to Noor, “I know your little secret. Your other secret.”
Noor feels relief at this, not fear or anger, but relief that finally someone knows.
Jamie was actually talking about Salahudin writing Noor’s essays but what I took from it is that the physical abuse was the other secret Noor was hiding.

SafaTheSofa It had been lifelong abuse, I believe. I think that the author purposefully didn't mention it in her chapters because Noor had grown used to it, and thought of it as natural. I think it is meant to show that her life was pretty miserable, so much so that she didn't think about the physical abuse so much. This is just my take on it, I am not that sure.
