Goodreads asked Helen Brown:

What’s the best thing about being a writer?

Helen Brown Readers. Through all my years as a syndicated columnist, readers taught me how to write. They let me know when I'd touched their hearts or made them laugh. Most were kind enough to remain silent the times I missed the mark.
Back in 1983, when we lost our son Sam, the best grief counselling came through the mail from readers. Some were bereaved parents who assured me it was possible to survive such trauma. I wrote "Cleo" in an attempt to repay the debt I owed them.
When I had a brush with breast cancer a few years ago, generous hearted readers shared their own stories and gave me courage.
Most of these people are friends I've never met. I can't thank them enough.
