Lils74 asked Frances Mayes:

One thing I love in your books is how you meld all your experiences together without always following a specific "a year in…" or rigid storyline many memoirs follow. I have been trying to craft a memoir about my life here in Nepal, where I've lived for years. But while I've written thoughts, experiences and observations, it lacks any cohesion. How do you manage to pull all the strands of memoir together like you do?

Frances Mayes I develop each chapter around a theme or incident. Writing about childhood would be impossible if I tried chronology--memory simply does not work like that when you are small. But you do remember a cluster of images around an experience.
