1stt King book for me ever-I've avoided him bc I thought he was only horror. Started listening to this audiobook. Seems like a new chapter every 2 min, & it’s very choppy. It’s not the abridged version, so that’s not it. It's also starting off like a very simple YA novel, certainly not what I expected. Granted, I'm only 3 "chapters" in. Does it get better? It's got 4 *’s here, so most of you think so...

Candee This was YA before YA existed. He wrote it for his then 13 year old daughter.
Kim You wrote this 5 years ago, so maybe you've read some other books by Stephen King by now. But, I just wanted to say that if you are put off by "horror" stories, King is not your typical horror story writer. His books can be charming coming of age, books, like The Body, where it's really all about the kids relating to each other (think the TV Series, Stranger Things). Or, really great character driven stories, like The Green Mile. The horror side of things is just the vehicle for some great storytelling.

Now, if you are afraid of clowns, do stay away from It!
Avaminn F'nett It was written for a 13 year-old, so it basically is a YA book. It's a really good YA book, though.

This is also the only book I've ever read by Steven King.
Sarah Smithers It's not YA annoying, though...and he said a couple things that made me think it was more adult before I found out it was YA.
Pinchot is a great narrator!
Jorge I'm about to get this one too. I don't know anything about it, I love Bronson though, he's awesome in the Larry Correia series Grimnoir Chronicles.
Probably not the best book to start with though, it takes place in the Dark Tower world, I enjoyed that series, it's been a while for me.
I had trouble getting into The Wind Through the Keyhole, still haven't finished it. The Dark Tower can be tough for some.
I've read many of his books, he defenetly takes you on a journey, hardly ever completely enjoyable. I've recently reread the Talisman and Black House, I love the way he writes kids.
I'm a fan, but I'm not so hardcore to be able to recommend a good place to start, although it seems like you're not much into horror. Perhaps Different Seasons. I remember really enjoying that one, and the gr reviews of it make me want to start it right now.
Charity Seconded that King is not a typical horror writer. His "scariest" book is considered to be Pet Sematary and IMO, it's a study in grief and loss. I actually don't usually think of his books like horror books at all until the last quarter or so. Christine - story of addiction and obsession, how a man loves his car more than his actual girl. Carrie concerns itself mostly with social dynamics of school bullying and child abuse. The Shining isn't even terribly scary, as it just makes you root for a man to overcome his addiction that he desperately wants to beat. The Dead Zone is more or less a romance novel ffs - Nicholas Sparks pretty much ripped the Notebook straight from its pages. Cujo might be his truest horror book IMO - where more than half the book is thriller vs emotional exploration.
