1stt King book for me ever-I've avoided him bc I thought he was only horror. Started listening to this audiobook. Seems like a new chapter every 2 min, & it’s very choppy. It’s not the abridged version, so that’s not it. It's also starting off like a very simple YA novel, certainly not what I expected. Granted, I'm only 3 "chapters" in. Does it get better? It's got 4 *’s here, so most of you think so...
Charity Seconded that King is not a typical horror writer. His "scariest" book is considered to be Pet Sematary and IMO, it's a study in grief and loss. I actually don't usually think of his books like horror books at all until the last quarter or so. Christine - story of addiction and obsession, how a man loves his car more than his actual girl. Carrie concerns itself mostly with social dynamics of school bullying and child abuse. The Shining isn't even terribly scary, as it just makes you root for a man to overcome his addiction that he desperately wants to beat. The Dead Zone is more or less a romance novel ffs - Nicholas Sparks pretty much ripped the Notebook straight from its pages. Cujo might be his truest horror book IMO - where more than half the book is thriller vs emotional exploration. (less)
