Goodreads asked Patricia A. Guthrie:

What’s the best thing about being a writer?

Patricia A. Guthrie Hard to answer that. The answer lies in the day, time of day, time of year, degree of mood. But, I think, being a novelist I can make stuff up. I can go to anywhere I like, if not physically, through books, photographs, the Internet and discover new terrain. You can get into people's heads, go into their homes. Build imaginary doll houses to place them. Build wardrobes for your characters. Have casting sessions (online--I usually use actors and actresses, but anyone with the kind of face and body you want) You can interview them like a reporter might do.

So, I'd say, wearing so many different hats: story teller, wardrobe mistress, director, actor, travel agent, house decorator, and ruining make-believe people's lives and putting them back together again.

Any of this make sense?
