I do NOT think this is suitable for a 14 year old (I'm a mom of 18 yr old twins who were/are readers). Although it may seem like a good book for a gamer kid, there is a recurring theme of death and mourning of several important people in the story. More importantly there is some ungraphic but still easily understood S&M sex scenes and depressed people. IT is a pretty heavy contemporary novel IMO. Vocabulary in the book is also advanced, although if you read with a kindle you can highlight and look up the meaning easily.

This is adult fiction, and I believe a YA book would be more suitable for a 14 year old.

My advanced reader kid would have done fine with this book at age 14. I think kids read for the parts that interest them and skip over the stuff that’s not so interesting. Yes Sadie's relationship with Dov was unhealthy but I don’t think it was described in a titillating way that would be harmful for a mature teen. If a teen finds the book too boring and adult, they will DNF long before they get to the bit of mature content that exists.

Haha. Ready Player One is more for the YA set, IMO.

Clara...if you're an adult, read it & judge that for yourself before giving it to a teen. If you're a 14-yr-old, this is a not a story for kids or even specifically for gamers...it's a powerful look at the creative process, what generates it, & the real life experiences of those caught up in it. The target audience for this book is 20-somethings on up (I'm a boomer & never a gamer, but highly recommend for adult readers of any age.)
