Goodreads asked Ryan G. Beaty:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Ryan G. Beaty Write what you love, because if you don't love it, it will show in your writing. And if you love it, odds are you aren't alone, and somewhere out there is an audience just waiting to discover you.

And don't get discouraged. Just as there are people who will love what you write, there are definitely people who won't. Overall, don't get caught up in it. Write what you love and trust your target audience will eventually find it, and don't change based on the opinions of people who don't like your work because I don't think you should take criticism from people you wouldn't take advice from. If someone didn't like your work, then it wasn't for them. Move on.
