Susan asked Andrew Gillsmith:

Hello. I saw your quote, “The universe requires sacrifice, child. It always has, and it always will. Because the universe is sacramental.” Can you explain more what you are expressing here?

Andrew Gillsmith Hi Susan,

If we believe--as all Catholics must--that the universe is an expression of the mind of God, that it was created purposefully, then that means it is shot through with the divine down to the quantum level. It means that everything that happens here is meaningful. More than that, it means that every action contributes in its own way towards God's plan.

What we know about God from scripture and tradition (not to mention observation and natural law) is that sacrifice and suffering are particularly meaningful and powerful. They have effects that are both temporal and eternal. In that sense, we can say that the universe itself is sacramental.

That's what I was hoping to express.
