Frederick Burke-Harding
Frederick Burke-Harding asked Andrew Gillsmith:

How do you think, Is there a real possibility to make and test the space ship for Mars and take anyone of the humanity to Mars in the near future? So that the people could start living there, too - along with the Earth?

Andrew Gillsmith The artificial magnetic shield is a clue on this. European space agency researchers believe it would be technically and financially feasible to use Phobos in this way to create a magnetosphere on Mars.

As with nearly everything we humans do, economics will determine the path. I could see a colony on Mars being used as a waystation for asteroid mining at some point in the next century or so. I am not optimistic about terraformation or any short to medium term plans for a self-sustaining human settlement there.
