What (and roughly where, in "our" world) are the 7 hinterlands in the Wide Green World? Oleana seems to be most of the midwest, Raintree further west (toward the Mississippi and south a ways); it's not clear where Seagate is though there's mention of snow-topped mountains, and it's not clear what hinterland Graymouth / New Moon etc. are in. I think of Luthlia as being Minnesota, perhaps up into the Dakotas / Manitoba.

I never worked out all seven, but Oleana centers on Ohio and surroundings, Raintree on western Indiana and Illinois to the Mississippi, Seagate is New England (which does have snow-topped mountains) and eastern-seaboard Canada, Luthlia indeed Minnesota and S. Canada. Not the Dakotas, they're too far west and still recovering from the Big Blight. The south presumably has a name or two for its regions (which would include Graymouth.) I don't believe I ever named all the hinterlands -- it's useful to leave some things undefined to give space for future tales.
The larger map included in the books is as good as it gets for defined geography, though I rearranged it freely when I needed to. The Hardboil was the Tennessee River, roughly, though it's been a while.

I'm interested in hearing about your early career if that's okay. :) What lessons have you learned about the business and the craft of writing that you wished you had known in the beginning? Do you write by hand, do you type, do you use dictation technology or a bit of all three? I just began reading the Vorkosigan Saga for the first time. I am now reading over 4 hours a day. Haha! Thank you for your work. :)

I recently read Captain Vorpatril's Alliance (loved it, btw!) in which it's mentioned almost as an aside that Komarr's gravity is less than that of Barrayar. That set me thinking about Barrayar's gravity. Is it the same as that of Earth? And what about other major planets in the Nexus - where do they stand on the gravitational scale? Do spaceships and space stations set their gravity at Earth level?
