The Maid is vague about the country it takes place in. Based on tea, crumpets and marmalade I was thinking England but the judicial system seems more like the US. So I'm settling on Canada, What do you think?

given how unprofessional the police were, it must have happened in florida

Personally im leaning more towards the US because of them going to Olive Garden. There are a few Olive Gardens in Canada but not many and its much more popular in the US
Paula
I'm listening to the abridged audio, and it starts, "Welcome to the Regency Grand Hotel in Canada."
Z
They talk about money in dollars and green, so it's not the UK. I assume the US, like another person I assumed it was NY with Olive Garden and the style of boutique hotel.

The courtroom scene actually makes no sense because a non-defendant witness would never be examined by her own attorney, only by the prosecutor and the defendant’s attorney. So it doesn’t much matter where it was supposedly set.

It seems to be written in such a way that the reader can imagine it taking place wherever they want. Parts of it do remind one of England, but on the other hand dollars are used, rather than pounds, when things like tips are mentioned. I settled on the US or Canada and thought about it no further.

A word about the location of the Regency Grand before we proceed. Nita Prose is vice president and editorial director at Simon & Schuster Canada (one reason why her mastery of voice and plot is so assured; she's clearly an excellent editor). We're never explicitly told that The Maid takes place in Toronto; understanding its author's Canadian background will help readers understand why Molly's Gran is decidedly British in tastes and diction, but no one ever questions those things.

The author is VP and editorial director at Simon & Schuster Canada, so I would guess that's where it's set.

Obviously, it's the U.S. Remember Juan Manuel? Why would he go to the U.K. or Canada?
Carol Katarsky
I thought it was New York based on some of the references to streets and neighborhoods in the city.
It's definitely the US. because only Molly was into the tea and crumpets, due to Gran's influence. Everyone else is drinking coffee and Juan even mentions that he's never seen crumpets before.

Thats funner. I swore it took place in NYC>

My guess? Given how they refer to "Dancing With the Stars" (where in the UK it's known as "Strictly Come Dancing"), I'm guessing it's somewhere in the US. Maybe Molly and her Gran are British/Canadian ex-pats...?
Stephanie Volkman Yudelson
I assume Canada based on all the tea drinking - it’s not that popular in the US (nor are marmalade and crumpets) plus we never refer to cookies as biscuits.
Laura
This book takes place in Toronto.
Marisa
UK. . . . All the tea drinking and calling it a cuppa
