Hi! As someone who doesn't really understand complicated science (don't get me wrong I love science but I'm no scientist!), I was wondering how you so brilliantly balanced the idea of including a lot of complicated science into The Martian without alienating some of your audience?

Hello Mr.Weir. I'm a huge fan of The Martian and I personally think humour is the only way to best experience life. But, do you think the book would still work if the protagonist had taken a deep, no-nonsense, contemplative view? Did you ever visualize The Martian on a serious emotionally exploratory note, darkly observant, possibly with a nihilistic twist leaving readers with despair for earthly life let alone Mars?
