A Goodreads user asked:

I haven’t read FBAA and I won’t ever because of the whole virgin thing which is gross. Will it be okay for me to read this book without reading the others first or will I be lost plot wise?

Kelsey The whole virgin thing shouldn't throw you off. it isn't a big deal. it isn't what the story is centered around but if you do read this first maybe it will give you the incentive to read FBAA because the stories are so good. how she intertwines what happens. God this is one of my favorite series ever. I love the world and you will get hooked!
Bailey The virgin thing doesn't rlly last long it's more ab her being rlly sheltered and lied to by her family not so much the holy and untouched thing.

Keree McGuire You should be okay. Some of the premise and plot might throw you off, as this is like a FBAA prequel. However, not to make you read FBAA but the virgin thing isn't a huge play in this book series. Honestly I dont think it harbors on it a lot.
Kimberley I think you should be fine. This book hints toward FBAA a little bit, but it is set hundreds, if not thousands of years before it, so it not affected by the plot enough that reading FBAA is required.
Jemika Whitethorn Da‘Neer The „Whole virgin thing“ is not a big deal at all in FBAA. It’s not being fetishized or made attractive dont let it prevent you from reading it. It’s really good.
llgbooks I would not let “the whole virgin thing” stop you from reading FBAA. At all.

Neda I don't think you'd be lost plot wise at all. I know that this series is technically a prequel to the FBAA series, but the plot is essentially standalone. All of the information that you need to follow the plot line is explained within this book since the characters are being properly introduced on their own without relation to the FBAA characters.
KateR. IDK, I may be wrong, but I think most of the answers you've received here may not addressing your real question. I'm not totally sure what you mean by "the whole virgin thing" however, if the root of your question is that you'd like to know if sex is a major aspect of these books, then the answer is yes. There is a lot of sex in these books, more than just about any other series I've personally read before. I have not read A Shadow in the Ember, but I would say that of the other books in this series, FBAA actually has the least amount of sex scenes (surprisingly).
