I had read Children of Time, Children of Ruin and Doors of Eden before reading this book, it was not relevant to the story at all. Can you see some parallels, yes absolutely. But its definitely not needed. You could read this before or after his other books. Book 2 on the other hand you will want to have read this one first.

This is the first in a trilogy; you can absolutely read it without having read anything else by Tchaikovsky. The book also includes a timeline of events and indexes of characters, species, and ships for reference.
