I am teaching New Kid next year. What companion texts would you suggest?

Jerry Craft Depends on the age, but if you three books that I love are "With the Fire on Hi," and "The Poet X," by Elizabeth Acevedo and Renee Watson's " Piecing Me Together." I like them because they show kids of color in a positive light. And even though life isn't perfect, they do not focus on the misery alone. Also, "Black Boy Joy," which just came out.
