I'm just wondering why on earth you chose the name "Sarah Smith" for the biggest bitch since Bitch-Face Barclay. I don't know how deep or wide your familiarity with Doctor Who is, but Sarah *Jane* Smith is one of the most beloved companions the show ever featured; was the name just coincidence?

Hi - good question. Every year I participate in the Clic Sargent 'character for sale' auction. It's a charity that helps kids with cancer and people can bid to have a character named after them. Sarah was that year's winner and I was writing Doing Time so she became the villain. I asked her if she was ok with it and she was thrilled. This year's winner was offered a chance to be a bad ass assassin but preferred a scene with Markham and his Spotted Dick. Hope this answers your question. Jodi.

Thank you for the answer about POD plods. I feel better now! I’m re-reading the St Mary’s books and I’m struck by the insight into human nature and the compassion that is in the stories, as well as the wit and humour which seem just as fresh to me second time round. You seem to be prolific! I am trying to write something myself. Do you have any advice? Do you set yourself targets each day? Plot first?

Hi Jodi. I have become a huge fan of the Chronicles of St Mary's books, and I started reading them around the same time that I was writing my first book, so they've become a big inspiration and aspiration as far as cohesive plots with likeable characters. I wanted to ask if you sometimes get an idea, then work it into a St Mary's plot as you're already rolling with them, and if you have some ideas reserved for later?
