Rocky's language is always described as complex musical notes. During the early stages, when Grace doesn't understand the language, it's show in the book as musical notes, but as he learns more, it's shown as English in italics (as others have mentioned).
Now I'm curious though. In the audiobook is his language always depicted as music notes question? How do you understand the translation question?

After Grace learns Rocky's language, it's just stilted English in italics.
