I would hope that in the audiobook they would play the actual musical notes that are presented in the book. That would help explain how Ryland Grace figured out a translation of the notes so he could understand.
Rocky's voice is actually dissonant chord clusters. The "chords" change while he's "talking" to indicate inflection. As Grace begins to understand Rocky with the help of the computer, we hear the English being spoken by the narrator, but with a funky, distortion. Very effective!
Cool! Now I want to listen to the audio!
