William Lewis
William Lewis asked Brian Staveley:

Brian, I really enjoyed reading The Emperor's Blades, it is full of adventure and dangerous situations. Have you ever had any real life adventures, or do you just have a vivid (and brilliant) imagination?

Brian Staveley Great question, William. Thanks! I've had a number of good adventures. I spent much of my younger life rock climbing, and can think of plenty of long days on rock faces and ridge lines. I remember climbing a route on Mt. Conness in California -- we lost the route, ended up on horribly crumbling rock, ran out of water around noon, and didn't summit until well after midnight, climbing in the dark by the light of one headlamp (the other hand gone out).

I switched over from rock climbing to adventure racing in my late twenties, and there, too, I have fond (really? fond?) memories of multi-day races on an hour or two of sleep, pouring cans of cold ravioli into my maw while mountain biking down the backside of some godforsaken mountain.

Writing full-time and child-raising leaves less time for adventure, but I'm hoping, after this third book is done, to get out next year and do something stupid again, preferably with some good friends.
