I found the movie to ultimately be cheesy and cheapen a large portion of the romance from the book. As for it being darker it most certainly is.

There is more sexual themes and gruesome details but if you have seen the movie i think you will be fine. I love both the movie and the book.
There is still a lot of romance though it is not a childlike fairy tale. The romance is more realistic.

I would read the book if only to be exposed to such a great author as Neil Gaiman.

I really don't understand why people say it's darker. I think it's just more bland. The only thing that might be "darker" is that his mom is not as great as in the movie, but she isn't bad either. Just kinda meh (like the rest of the book, tbh)

This is one of the few books for which I love love love both the movie and the book in equal measure. There are small differences, obviously, but they are both great.

I personally like both; the book and the movie. The book is just as romantic in my opinion but the romance doesn't start until later on in the book's storyline because Tristran doesn't meet Yvaine right away in the novel like he does in the movie with the candle. We do get more details on his father's relationship with Una, though, so there's that. As far darker, yeah it's a little dark, but the movie wasn't feather-light either.

The movie is fantastic, and they did a great job of manufacturing it to be a good based-on story. The book definitely had some extra jarring moments, leaving you to wonder how far it would trend from the movie. I think it was better for me to see the movie first, then read the book. I'd recommend the book if you have not read it!
There were parts of the movie I'd have liked to see mirror or flesh out a bit more in the book, but overall enjoyment was had on both fronts.
