Sara I think the author left it blank to not give focus to 1 particular disorder but rather focus on the consequences and challenges of being misdiagnosed.

Florence It is an interesting challenge to contemplate what mental illness she’s facing, but as many others have said the author left it blank for a reason. At first I thought bipolar, then I read schizophrenia as a suggestion and I was a little surprised because she doesn’t seem that out of touch with reality. I have known several people with schizophrenia and they have a very difficult time functioning in the world. Another possibility is borderline personality disorder. This is another mental illness with negative connotations in the community. In the end, it doesn’t matter. They are all labels.
nicola moseley Definitely not autism as someone here commented with all certainty! That’s not something you can ‘cure’ with a pill. The depression and meltdowns that often run alongside autism are probably more to do with being forced to fit into a society that doesn’t accommodate very well

Vicky Comly The actual diagnosis is not really relevant. What is pivitol is her mother's disfunction, and the withholding nature of their relationship. That seems to me to be the real problem.
Filmbuffchgo Martha was schizophrenic. This is the psychiatric diagnosis with the greatest stigma attached to it.

Jo Small pink pills are lithium used for bi polar disorders.
Suzanne Morrone Why do you suppose she left it blank? And why does bipolar make things any different than any other mental illness?
Holli It seemed that Martha was bipolar, but it was left blank.
Susan I think schizophrenia more than Bipolar.

Shona Parker It's deliberately left vague by Mason but could perhaps be bipolar.
