it sounded to me like the author took the stigma attached to schizophrenia with the presentation of borderline personality disorder, more than bipolar.
Seemed very much like bipolar disorder with primary presentation depressive episodes. Borderline personality disorder is treated with therapy not a pill. Schizophrenia starts at a later age in women and is a thought disorder. Ability to live alone in Paris, untreated, and hold a job unlikely with schizophrenia.
