Savanna
It seems to be author-invented. I can't find anything close besides a hibiscus, but that seems highly unlikely because of the climate. The flowers are described as growing kind of like poppies do in Europe, but actual poppies (and "milk of the poppy") exist in this world.

I think it is the scarlet pimpernel which has been used in literature before and is a common annual weed flower that grows close to the ground in Europe and the US. It can symbolize daring, and courage, and in some cultures, it is believed that the plant can be used to ward off evil spirits, and in others, it is said to bring good luck. In England, the Scarlet Pimpernel is sometimes called "shepherd's weatherglass" because the flowers only open in the sunshine, and so can be used to predict the weather.
Adriana Porter Felt
I think it's a red columbine, which would set the story in north america. They have five pointy petals and grow low to the ground in woodlands. They are not very common.
