Nayab asked Scott Sigler:

When did you realize that you wanted to express your creativity and knowledge through writing? Was it encouraged by others? What creative expressions (e.g. art, dance, media, music) have you tried in the past, present or future to express your creativity through?

Scott Sigler Howdy, Nayab.

When I saw the 1976 version of KING KONG, it scared the living crap out of me (I was 7 — angry, giant gorillas will do that to a young boy). I cried and wanted to leave, my dad said "no way." As soon as we walked out of the theater, I — still crying — asked when we could go see it again.

That was the moment I knew I wanted to do the same thing to others: provide that thrill of the safe scare. I knew I wanted to do something in entertainment, although I couldn't put into thoughts and words what that something was.

I wrote monster stories after that, watched all the giant monster movies I could find (most of them I watched with my dad, who is still the most-awesome dude there ever was). I loved comics and wanted to do that. I loved movies and wanted to make those. I loved BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and wanted to make a show like that. Etc., etc.

A few years later I bought CYCLE OF THE WEREWOLF for my mom for Christmas. She was a big Stephen King fan. I made the mistake of glancing at the first page before I wrapped it up. I was fourteen or so, and after reading that book, that was it. I was a King fan and I wanted to be just like him, make scary books like he made.

I probably knew I wanted to be a writer since KING KONG, as words always came very easy to me, but it was CYCLE that sealed the deal.
