Nancy Judge
Nancy Judge asked:

I'm confused. Was Dawn in 2 airplane crashes? Going back and forth in time is difficult for me. I loved all the Egypt material and Picoult's books. I just don't get her being in a plane crash with Wyatt. Please enlighten me.

Joyce If you read the beginning initial crash and the later chapter on the crash, you’ll see the exact same wording.
Annette Mummert I, too, was confused and questioned two plane crashes... thought it was just one- just reliving it , but question why the airline gave her a plane ticket to anywhere and she chose to go to Wyatt . If she was already with Wyatt, then why the free ticket to Cairo....I felt like someone didn't do a very good job of editing...
Susan 1 plane crash, 2nd has more detail and includes Wyatt. At the start of the book you "assume" she is running away, at the end she is returning.

Karen Perras Has Jodi ever been asked to explain the confusion about the plane crash(es)? Where could I find her answer?

Amy The book followed a non linear timeline. I think because of the Egyptology, and specifically “The Book of Two Ways,” Picoult wanted to make it seem to the reader that they were two separate paths/parallel universes, although within the last 2-3 Water/Land sections it becomes more apparent that it’s simple non linear storytelling. Although, in spite of that, I think the larger message of no matter which path the dead took—land or water—s/he ended up in the same place is definitely at play within the “After.”
Lena Popa i asked jodi & she answered! she said:

Lena, it’s the same crash. The one you see in the prologue is what happens to her and Wyatt when they fly to Boston. The second time you see the crash you get to “pan out” and see him with her.

I deliberately let you think it was a crash that happens after she and brian fight at the beginning of the book - but in reality she leaves the house in anger… and I never actually say she gets on a plane ;)
