It is definitely not necessary to read The Mortal Instruments and The Dark Artifices before The Last Hours. Theoretically, you could even read Chain of Gold without ever having read another Shadowhunter book. Personally, I would recommend reading The Infernal Devices (Clockwork Angel, Prince, and Princess) before getting to Chain of Gold, though. (less)
