I think Julian started killing them off one by one because he knew that they were "weak" and would eventually tell someone about what happened. I think that over the years he kept tabs on all of the others and knew their weaknesses. That was how he knew to visit David and offer him alcohol to get him drunk in order to kill him. He watched them and knew that the secret was taking a toll on all of their lives and eventually someone would break.
