Jessica Khoury Hi Elena! Happy to answer some Q's--thanks for reading Kalahari with your group! :)

1. I chose the Kalahari because in my first two books before it, I wrote about the Amazon rainforest and a South Pacific tropical island. I was ready to explore a new setting that was very different from these, so a dry desert was the natural place to start. After researching all the deserts in the world, I chose the Kalahari because it has so many interesting animals and plants, and because it was a setting I'd never seen used in a story like this before. I spent 3 weeks there doing research for the book to learn even more about it, which made writing the story even more fun!

2. The idea for Metalcium came from an article I read about a team of scientists at the University of Edinburgh who were experimenting with creating "living metal cells." As a writer, my imagination ran with that idea and asked "what if they succeeded a little TOO much?" Here is a link to one of the articles about their research: https://www.newscientist.com/article/...
