I started with this one--I hadn't even realized it was considered part of a series until I came on here to review it!--and did just fine. The heroine of this novel is best friends with the heroine of the first book (The Apple Orchard), but I didn't feel like I was missing anything important by not having read Tess's book first.

It appears to be the trend lately to set a bunch of books in the same general geographic area and call it a series even while labeling each individual book as a standalone novel. It's been my experience that the books in this type of series have only a loose connection to each other--often the location, and maybe a few characters, if that--and really can be read on their own.(less)
