Mexican Gothic is not a fantasy in the traditional sense. The only similarities I see so far are that both books feature a young heroine during a specific era in Mexico.

GoJaS is a mix of fairytale and fantasy and mythology. Mexican Gothic is very much...gothic. It's horror, creepy, and unsettling with a tighter narrative, in my opinion. There's no overt "mythology" in the latter and reads more like a period piece and less like a historical fantasy. (less)
