It's slightly better, but maybe only because it's shorter. I wasn't a big fan of either of them.
Vanessa (The Wolf & Her Books)
I haven't yet read Gods of Jade and Shadow but I know that the author has stated that she never wants to write the same book twice. Mexican Gothic is not a fantasy in the traditional sense. The only similarities I see so far are that both books feature a young heroine during a specific era in Mexico.
GoJaS is a mix of fairytale and fantasy and mythology. Mexican Gothic is very much...gothic. It's horror, creepy, and unsettling with a tighter narrative, in my opinion. There's no overt "mythology" in the latter and reads more like a period piece and less like a historical fantasy.
