Why isn't the full title ever given? It is: On The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle For Life.

You ask why the full title is never given, yet I see it is right here on goodreads, just above your question - Original Title: On The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle For Life. In print, the title page of my folio society edition also gives the full title. So your question is irrelevant. The full title is given, in 2 cases that I have right before me. As to why it isn't always given, I'd guess that its length makes it cumbersome, and perhaps the term 'favoured races' could be misinterpreted and taint the purpose of work.

Cited from Wikipedia:
"Its full title was On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. For the sixth edition of 1872, the short title was changed to The Origin of Species."

This was the original title, but the sixth edition (the final one before his death) it has been shortened to the one we use today.

Not enough space on spine of book?

Actually, I have this e-book in front of me, and its first page displays the full title as you know it. However, on the Gutenberg Project info page, the title is displayed as "On the origin of species: 6th edition", which is consistent with Wikipedia information. Your question was not irrelevant at all, since I had the same doubt. However, I am satisfied with this clarification. Happy reading!

Obviously, to keep pathetic trolls from finding out there is a longer title. (In your case, they failed.)

Well done you are better than us for knowing the full title of the book.
Nick
Even though it is not titled so, it does make notes of at the beginning of the introduction.
