asked:
**SPOILER ALERT** Was anyone able to figure out the meaning of the argument that Toddie overheard with the male voices and the woman saying "stop"? I just finished the book and am a bit confused by this part. Thank you!

I am so glad I'm not the only one who wondered about this.

One of the major plot holes in this story. (I don't think Toddie overheard it, but Margie/Maggie who had the farm and the dog).
I wonder if it had something to do with Buddy Bright? He made a mention about the watcher becoming the watched. I feel like there was more to his story than just a convict hiding in plain sight.

This was one of the many reasons I did not give this book high ratings. Too much leaving the reader unsatisfied. This was made to be a very important clue in the story, but then never revisited or answered.

I heard the author at a book club event and someone asked this question. She said it was just a couple of drunks and a red herring.

It was never explained, but I thought it might be Symmes’ three children or him with his first son and daughter or it could have been Symmes, Toddie and one of his sons.
It was sort of a red herring that didn’t go anywhere.

Totally forgot about this! Good question. Now I want to know.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one wondering the same thing.

I always wondered if it were Symmes, and his oldest two children. The older son wasn't as forgiving as the daughter. I thought perhaps they were meeting up for a midnight visit and got in an argument about Symmes desertion of the family and the daughter was trying to calm big brother and newly-reconnected daddy. These are just my thoughts.

I actually went back and re-read some of the latter pages looking for this answer. Don't have a clue. Glad it wasn't just me.

Yes, and what was up with Buddy Bright seeing the old man driving drunk that night? He just saw him and that's it? This book jumped around too much.
Betty
It wasn't Toddie who told her the story. It was the woman who owned the farm where the accident occurred and where the deer carcass was found.
Susan E Piersol
It was never answered... big hole.

Ooooooo.....it wasn't ever explained, was it? I remember thinking Vanessa when the Lady said it was a screechy voice. Hahaha!
Colleen
I can't answer this but I too wondered. I don't think this was ever explained.
