Hi Jeff. I just finished your book and I can already tell that it's going to be one that stays with me. I thank you for your commitment in telling a story so personal and yet so universal - the mystery of why and how we make choices and why and how circumstances both shape them and play a part in their consequences. Do you think colleges like Yale need to do more than just encourage poor students academically?
Jeff Hobbs
Hi and thank you for your very kind words. Yale and many other schools, I believe, have been investing a great deal into providing more than just encouragement over the last decade. It's very heartening. The difficult aspect is how, even with all the resources available in schools (writing tutors, career services, counseling, etc), those resources are mainly available to students who ask for them. And the students most inclined to ask are those who, from the day they were born, were led to believe that adults existed to help them. Someone like Rob, who from a very young age was forced to see himself as a functioning adult, was always loathe to ask. Best, Jeff

I've just finished your book, it only took me 3 days to read since I could not put it down. The writing was absolutely beautiful. Even though you start out knowing how the story ends I could not help but hope for a different ending. Is there any progress at all on finding the people who killed Robert? Has there been no leads in the past 3 years?

Found 'Peace' at a bookstore in Berkeley, my alma mater, and could not put it down! I too worked at the univ cafeteria, a poor minority among peers with money and two-parent homes. You capture this, and the deep love of a parent and child who've struggled together, so well. Thank you. My questions: Do you think Rob would be alive if Carl hadn't stolen? Was Jackie aware of this thievery? Has Jackie been able to travel?

Jeff Hobbs:
Jeff, I am heartbroken and angry and am finding myself almost more upset about the life and death of Rob Peace than any other person i have read about. Your ability to flesh out this man's character is amazing. What an eye-opening read it has been for me. is it wrong to write this without a ???. I simply have this amazing need to tell you what an impact your book is having on my life. So very much to digest.
