A Goodreads user asked Lawrence Wright:

I’m always impressed by your research and ability to filter information in a compelling fashion. How does that process adapt when writing fiction?

Lawrence Wright As a journalist, I am usually asking "What happened?" the difference with this kind of fiction is that the question is "What could happen?" Research is still required, at least for me. I don't like magical realism or anything that smacks of made-up ideas. I want to know what actually happened before I start to write.
